Truck Project Phases


This page is where I'm laying out the phases of the work on my truck. The goal - to make a nice looking driver that I can drive comfortably. It will be used as a truck from time to time. It will also be used on truck club events from time to time.

 

Phase #1 – General fix-up and drive

·        fix miss in motor (tune-up?)       [9/24/03]

·        purchase “chrome” grill from Terry Bowman       [8/16/03]

·        purchase headlight adjuster screws and nuts       [8/26/03]

·        purchase chrome headlight trim         [9/3/03]

·        purchase letters for grill         [already on grill I purchased]

·        purchase chrome rear bumper         [8/26/03]

·        purchase bumper bolts         [8/26/03]

·        purchase rear bumper brackets       [9/3/03]

·        purchase/install front sway bar       [9/3/03]

·        install “chrome” grill       [9/3/03]

·        purchase new radiator cap

·        purchase 2 - 15x8 stock steel wheels (Harold Smith?)

·        have tires mounted on new rims and install on front

·        purchase 4 shocks

·        purchase 2 - 255/70R15 tires for back

·        purchase rear license plate holder

·        install chrome rear bumper         [10/14/03]

·        install chrome headlight bezels       [10/14/03]

·         

 

 

Phase #2 – Transmission & rear-end swap

(This phase is conditional upon the condition of the transmission and rearend. If either is not usable, some decisions will have to be made.)

·        check out Saginaw 4-speed for condition        [1/13/04]

·        check out 3:07 rear-end for condition

·        purchase shifter (Hurst Comp. Plus from ebay)        [1/9/04]

·        cleanup & paint transmission        [1/13/04]

·        cleanup & paint rear-end

·        install transmission & rear-end

·        get drive shaft modified to fit

·        swap brake parts from “old” to “new” rear-end

 

 

Phase #3 – Engine build-up & swap

(Engine weight – 250 L6 = 440 lbs while 305 V8 [SBC] = 575 lbs.)

·        rebuild 305 Chevy small block (from 1979 Chevy ˝ ton owned by dad)

·        head work done (valve job and porting?)

·        block checked for problems and then bored (.030 or .060)

·        rebuilt carburetor purchased from Carbco in Lemay

·        throttle cable and peddle purchased

·        flywheel purchased

·        use 4 barrel manifold that dad has

·        use exhaust manifolds that dad has

·        paint block and heads black to hid leaks

·        purchase air cleaner (stock or aftermarket)

·        replace 250 6 cylinder with rebuild 305 V8

 

 

Phase #4 – Bed rebuild & replace

·        repair bed sides, front end and tailgate

·        assemble bed sides and ends

·        paint bed cross members

·        prime and paint bed

·        get wood ready (purchase or make)

·        purchase bed strips

·        purchase bed bolt set

·        purchase new chains

·        install wood

·        have inside of bed sprayed with liner

·        make tonneau cover fit, add lift cylinders and hinges

 

Phase #5 – Cab repair

·        repair rust areas (cab floor, cab supports, cab quarter panels)

·        prime and paint inside of cab, except for the dash

·        fix up passenger side fender, prime, and install

·        get driver side fender, prime, and install

·        repair rust areas of hood

·        repair & seal roof seam

·        prime & paint white portion of cab

·        prime & paint gold portion of cab

·        prime & paint hood

·        prime and paint fenders
